Report: Nationals heavily engaged in trade talks for Marlins' Realmuto
Five Miami Marlins players were worth more than 3.0 wins above replacement in 2017. After dealing Christian Yelich to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, only one remains in South Florida: catcher J.T. Realmuto.
He may be joining his former teammates soon as the mass exodus continues and teams inquire about his availability. The Washington Nationals have been the most heavily engaged team in trade discussions surrounding the slugging catcher, a source told Sirius XM's Craig Mish.
The Marlins have reportedly been asking for top prospect Victor Robles in return, according to FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman.
No team received worse production from the catcher position in 2017. As a unit, Nationals catchers hit .211/.276/.320 and were worth a collective -1.1 WAR. Adding Realmuto would fill what is arguably the lineup's only glaring hole from a season ago.
The Nationals were reportedly expressing interest in both Realmuto and the since-traded Yelich in early January.
The 26-year-old Realmuto has hit .290/.337/.440 with 28 home runs, 113 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases while showing impressive durability appearing in 278 games over the last two seasons.
