Report: Magic trade Payton to Suns for 2nd-round pick

The Orlando Magic have traded point guard Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft pick, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The pick is by way of the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Suns were in dire need of a point guard, and in Payton they get a toolsy 23-year-old who fits their development timeline and is in the midst of the best offensive season of his career. He'll be a restricted free agent at season's end, but the Suns give up very little to get a two-month trial run and see if they can or want to retain him come summer.

The Magic, who traded up to grab Payton 10th overall in the 2014 draft, plainly weren't interested in paying his next contract.

Shooting has long been a weakness for Payton, but he's made strides this year, hitting a career-best 52 percent of his field goals and 37.3 percent of his 3-pointers. He's averaged 13 points, four rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.5 steals in 44 games.
