Panthers cut longtime RB Stewart
The Carolina Panthers have cut longtime running back Jonathan Stewart after 10 seasons with the team.
Stewart joins veterans Charles Johnson and Kurt Coleman as recent Panthers releases.
Stewart is the Panthers' all-time leading rusher with 7,318 career rushing yards. He led the team in rushing in 2017 with 680 yards and six touchdowns, despite the presence of rookie Christian McCaffrey.
The team is currently overhauling its offense, however, as former offensive coordinator Mike Shula was replaced with Norv Turner. McCaffrey also figures to see more time as a rusher, though he led the team in receptions with 80 out of the backfield.
Stewart had one year remaining on his contract and his release opens up $3.7 million in cap space for the franchise.
