The Washington Redskins have selected defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne out of Alabama with the 13th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.
It's the second straight draft the NFC East club has taken an Alabama defensive tackle in the opening round, as the Redskins added Jonathan Allen last year.
Payne's addition helps fill a massive need for Jay Gruden's club, as Washington ranked last in the league in rushing yards allowed per game at 134.1.
Da'Ron Payne Bio
Position: DT
School: Alabama
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 311 lbs
Strengths
- A wall of strength that never gets pushed backward. Impossible for most college linemen to move, and throws lighter blockers to the side with ease.
- Tremendous closing speed on the ball carrier once he's freed from a blocker. Can fluidly transition from rushing move to tackle.
- A smooth athlete for a player of his size. Combines solid technique with terrifying strength and size.
Weaknesses
- The Alabama factor. Payne's college production has to be taken with a grain of salt as he played surrounded by other dominant players.
- A questionable pass-rusher, rarely making an impact against the pass if his first move isn't successful.
- Mobility. Lateral movement is not a strength; he prefers to play in his own lane and beat blockers with power and hands rather than speed.
- Leverage. Needs to be more consistent about keeping his pad level low off the snap. Without great lateral movement, getting under blockers at NFL level will be key to making a difference as a pass-rusher.
