Mariners' Servais: Gordon won't move to 2B after Cano's injury
Dee Gordon is staying put in center field.
Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais said the speedy outfielder will not revert to his familiar position at second base after Robinson Cano fractured his hand in Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers.
"Not at this point," Servais said when asked if Gordon is being considered as Cano's replacement, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. "We'll have to see wait and see what’s best for the ballclub and how long Robbie is going to be out and make decisions from there. We'll look at other internal options at second base and go from there."
Gordon was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a shortstop and started 147 games at the position from 2011-2013 until he became the club's second baseman in 2014. He remained at that position throughout his three-year tenure with the Miami Marlins, winning a Gold Glove award in 2015.
The Mariners, with Jean Segura firmly entrenched as the club's shortstop and Cano not going anywhere, acquired Gordon from the Marlins in the winter and immediately announced the plan to convert him to a center fielder. Results have been mixed thus far for Gordon, who has a minus-2 OAA (Outs Above Average), minus-8 defensive runs saved, and minus-1.7 UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating).
In Cano's absence, the Mariners are expected to recall one of Taylor Motter or Gordon Beckham from Triple-A. Motter has appeared in seven games with the Mariners this season, hitting .267/.353/.467. Beckham, a nine-year veteran, has performed well in the minors, currently slashing .300/.412/.500 with four home runs and more walks (19) than strikeouts (14).
