Durant plans on re-signing with Warriors, but 'anything can happen'
Kevin Durant delivered probably his greatest postseason performance Wednesday in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but prior to the contest he was being asked about his future.
"Yeah, yeah," Durant told USA TODAY's Sam Amick when asked if he would return to the Golden State Warriors next season. "Everything, the money and stuff that's got to, the contract got to (be) worked out, but I plan on being here. I said that earlier this year. I didn't plan on anything else. But this is the NBA, and anything can happen. And I know that anything can happen."
That much is certain, as the former MVP who joined a Dubs squad coming off a 73-win season in 2016 can attest.
Durant reportedly plans to opt out of the second season of the two-year contract he signed last summer, a common maneuver to restructure how much he gets paid next season. He made an even $25 million in 2017-18.
Durant even addressed rumors that LeBron James would take a free-agent meeting with the Warriors, expressing skepticism.
"I have no clue," Durant said. "I mean everybody can speculate. This guy over here who works for ESPN, I'm sure he's got a theory. I just don't believe it. I don't believe anything in this NBA thing until I see it."
Durant outdueled James Wednesday, scoring a playoff career-high 43 points as the Warriors put the Cavs on the brink with a 3-0 series lead. He added 13 rebounds and seven assists, shooting 65 percent from the floor. His performance offset a combined 7-of-27 shooting night from Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
