Manchester United agrees to reported £47M move for Shakhtar's Fred
Manchester United announced Tuesday it has reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk on a deal for midfielder Fred.
According to the BBC's Simon Stone, the move for the highly touted 25-year-old will cost United £47 million.
Fred's signing gives the 2017-18 runner-up a new option in the centre of the pitch, and manager Jose Mourinho could potentially partner him with Nemanja Matic in midfield behind a more advanced Paul Pogba. Fred played in a similar role with Shakhtar this past season, operating as one of the two deep midfielders in a 4-2-3-1.
A report surfaced Sunday that the two sides were approaching an agreement, with the Brazilian set to undergo a medical in England at some point this week. The club is also expected to wrap up negotiations for young Porto full-back Diogo Dalot after reportedly triggering his £17.4-million release clause in late May.
United first confirmed the agreement for Fred on YouTube with a video detailing a contingent of talented South Americans who have played for the 20-time Premier League champion, including Juan Sebastian Veron, Carlos Tevez, and Alexis Sanchez, to name a few.
The Brazilian was named to his country's 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in Russia, and appeared in Brazil's recent 2-0 friendly win against Croatia as a late second-half substitute.
