Manchester United wraps up reported £47M deal for Brazil's Fred
Manchester United rubber-stamped the transfer of Brazilian international Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday, making the 25-year-old the club's second signing of the close season.
Fred, who is currently representing the Selecao at the World Cup, joined the Red Devils for a reported £47-million fee.
The two sides reached an agreement earlier this month. It is believed Fred underwent a medical in the week before the tournament in Russia.
"Fred will complement our other midfielders' qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game," manager Jose Mourinho said in a statement. "I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team."
Fred is Mourinho's second recruitment of the month following the arrival of full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto. An energetic player who dictates play, Fred is expected to relieve the pressure from the shoulders of sole defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic and allow Paul Pogba free reign.
Manchester City was heavily linked with the Brazilian in the January transfer window. He was considered a natural replacement for countryman Fernandinho in the middle of the park, but nothing materialised. City eventually set its sights on Napoli midfielder Jorginho.
As with Alexis Sanchez, City's loss is United's gain.
