Wayne Rooney is reportedly on the brink of becoming the latest England legend to join Major League Soccer.

England's all-time leading scorer is expected to meet with D.C. United officials later this week to finalise his move from Everton, according to Simon Stone of BBC Sport.

Stone believes he could make his debut against the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 14 at Audi Field if negotiations progress as planned.

D.C. United has been linked with a move for Rooney since May, when he reportedly agreed to a deal in principle to join the MLS side.

Head coach Ben Olsen confirmed interest in the 32-year-old.

"There is interest in Wayne Rooney from our end and I think there is interest from his end too,'' Olsen told reporters in May, according to The Press Association. "I hope it can get over the line because he's a very good player who can help us. He would be a great player for this league.''

The proposed move to D.C. would reportedly see Rooney sign a contract that runs until 2020 after Everton accepted a transfer fee worth $17 million (£13 million).

Rooney, Manchester United's record goal-scorer, returned to his boyhood club last summer and finished the season as Everton's top scorer with 11 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Former English stars such as David Beckham, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard have ended their careers in the North American league in recent years.
