Arsenal finalises Torreira signing from Sampdoria for reported £25M
Arsenal has officially completed the transfer of Lucas Torreira, signing the Uruguay star from Serie A side Sampdoria for a reported £25 million.
A defensive midfielder with a talent for disrupting opponents' attacks, Torreira is fresh off representing his nation at the World Cup in Russia. He helped Oscar Tabarez's side progress from Group A in first place, setting up a round of 16 victory over Portugal before being eliminated in the quarter-finals by France.
"In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game," manager Unai Emery said in a statement. "A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup.
"He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season."
The 22-year-old made 38 total appearances for Sampdoria last season, scoring four goals and recording an assist as the Blucerchiati finished 10th.
Torreira will wear No. 11 for the Gunners.
