Jerry Colangelo to step away from role with 76ers at end of year

Jerry Colangelo will leave his post as special adviser to the Philadelphia 76ers at the end of the year, he told the Washington Post's Tim Bontemps last week.

A source confirmed to Bontemps that Colangelo's contract will not be renewed.

The Sixers brought Colangelo aboard in late 2015 after the NBA took issue with former general manager Sam Hinkie's prolonged rebuilding process. The move ultimately led to Hinkie's resignation and the hiring of Colangelo's son, Bryan, as team president.

Bryan Colangelo resigned in May after an investigation determined his wife had operated burner Twitter accounts that were critical of various 76ers players and other NBA figures.

The elder Colangelo said the situation has been personally trying.

"I haven't made any public comments about what transpired," Jerry said. "I don’t think it would be appropriate. It's a very difficult summer for (Bryan) and his family."

The 78-year-old remains the managing director of USA Basketball.
