Meyer claims he took 'appropriate action' amid investigation

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer released a statement Friday defending himself against claims he knew of domestic violence incidents involving one of his coaches but didn't respond appropriately.

Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith was fired in July when his 2009 arrest and 2015 police investigation relating to domestic violence were made public. His ex-wife, Courtney Smith, believes Meyer knew violence was taking place and didn't act. However, the head coach said in his statement that he followed protocol.

Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday and the university announced Thursday he'd be investigated by a six-person independent panel.

Buckeyes offensive coordinator Ryan Day is serving as acting head coach in his absence.

Meyer also released a statement upon being placed on paid administrative leave, noting that it would allow the team to participate in training camp without distraction.
