Kyrie named 'Little Mountain' at Standing Rock Sioux ceremony
Kyrie Irving has been given a new name: "Little Mountain."
The Boston Celtics star and his sister, Asia, took part in a sacred naming ceremony in Cannon Ball, N.D., on Thursday in recognition of their visit to the Standing Rock Sioux, the ancestral tribe of the Irvings' late mother.
"We're welcoming home two of our own," Standing Rock chairman Mike Faith said, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "This definitely is history."
The Irvings' mother, Elizabeth Larson, was a descendant of the White Mountain family, but was adopted and left the reservation as a child. She passed away when Irving was four years old.
Irving has previously drawn connections to his Native American lineage. He sports a tattoo of the Standing Rock Sioux logo on his neck as well as on an edition of his signature sneaker. He has also voiced his support of protesters against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
