Browns fire Hue Jackson

The Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson on Monday, the team announced.

Jackson was under contract through the 2019 season and the Browns are on the hook for his remaining salary, Schefter adds. His .205 winning percentage is the second worst in NFL history among coaches with at least 40 games, according to ESPN Stats & Info. His percentage with the Browns, however, is just .088.

General manager John Dorsey was concerned about the growing rift between Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield being pressured to support one of the two coaches when he deals with the media, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. However, owner Jimmy Haslam had been wanting to retain Jackson as of early Monday morning, adds NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Haley was also let go on Monday.

The Browns had gone 3-36-1 under Jackson since the start of the 2016 season. They finished fourth in the AFC North each of the past two years and currently occupy the same spot at 2-5-1 through eight games, having lost their last three matchups.

Jackson is the sixth straight Browns head coach to be fired following the second game of a season against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns rank 24th in the league while averaging 21.1 points scored and 24th with 26.3 points allowed per game this season.

Marty Schottenheimer was the last Browns head coach to compile a record better than .500 in his tenure with the team. He went 44-27-0 over 71 games from 1984-88.
