Report: Padres, Mariners discussed trade involving Myers, Segura
The San Diego Padres have discussed dealing outfielder Wil Myers to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for shortstop Jean Segura and starting pitcher Mike Leake, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
As of Tuesday night, the Mariners had contacted Leake - who has a no-trade clause - about a possible move to San Diego, sources told Rosenthal, who added that the pitcher is mulling other options.
If the Padres do trade Myers, they apparently want the money to be relatively even going both ways, Rosenthal reported. The outfielder has four years and $64 million remaining on his contract while Segura and Leake have a combined $85 million left on their deals. Segura is under contract for four more seasons while Leake has two remaining.
No deal is believed to be close at the moment. Like Leake, Segura would also need to waive his no-trade clause, per Cot's Contracts.
The Mariners have been active on the trade front in recent weeks, trading Mike Zunino and Guillermo Heredia to the Tampa Bay Rays in early November before sending ace James Paxton to the New York Yankees on Monday for Justus Sheffield and other prospects.
Meanwhile, Myers could be expendable in San Diego. Signing Eric Hosmer last offseason displaced him from his spot at first base, and he wound up back in the outfield before being experimented with at third base. The Padres are reportedly looking to add an established third baseman ahead of 2019, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
Segura has also had his name pop up in trade rumors as the Mariners are looking to retool, and the Yankees have already asked about his availability. In two seasons with the Mariners, Segura hit .302/.345/.421 with 21 home runs, 59 doubles, and 42 stolen bases.
Leake, 31, was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017. Since joining the Mariners, he is 13-11 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 36 starts.
