Report: Astros in discussions with 2nd-tier free-agent outfielders
The Houston Astros look like they want to upgrade their outfield in free agency, but it won't be with the cream of the crop.
Houston has been active in discussions with the tier of free-agent outfielders below Bryce Harper, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, who lists A.J. Pollock, Andrew McCutchen, and Michael Brantley as possibilities.
The Astros had a deal in place for Harper last July, but it was nixed by Washington Nationals ownership. With him likely commanding a deal in excess of $300 million, the aforementioned outfielders would be more budget-friendly options for Houston.
If the season were to start today, Houston's starting outfield could consist of George Springer, Josh Reddick, and Tony Kemp. Jake Marisnick, Derek Fisher, and Kyle Tucker would also be options.
Any one of Pollock, McCutchen, or Brantley would provide the Astros with an upgrade, especially from an experience standpoint.
2018 totals
PLAYER | AB | HR | RBI | OPS | WAR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
A.J. Pollock | 413 | 21 | 65 | .800 | 2.5 |
Andrew McCutchen | 569 | 20 | 65 | .792 | 2.6 |
Michael Brantley | 570 | 17 | 76 | .832 | 3.5 |
Without factoring in arbitration, the Astros' payroll sits at $77.9 million, according to Spotrac, which means they should have money to spend during the offseason.
