North Carolina fires HC Larry Fedora

North Carolina announced the firing of head coach Larry Fedora on Sunday.

Fedora and the Tar Heels struggled to a 2-9 record in 2018 that included just one conference victory.

The 56-year-old was hired in 2012 and spent seven seasons in Chapel Hill, accumulating a 45-43 overall record (28-28 in ACC play). He appeared in the ACC championship game in 2015 after winning the league's Coastal division, but is just 13-23 since.

"We appreciate all that Larry Fedora has done for us over the last seven years - coming to Carolina in the midst of an NCAA case and bringing stability to our football program when we most needed it,'' Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. "Despite injuries, despite setbacks and hardships, Larry never made excuses. He focused his teams on overcoming adversity, and I deeply respect the way he persevered and led our program each day with integrity through some tough times. This was not an easy decision because of the deep affinity I have for Larry. It simply is time to take our football program in a new direction."

Fedora has four years left on his contract and is owed $3 million per season over the next four years. The funds will be paid by North Carolina's Department of Athletics and not through state funds.
