Report: Mets working toward potential deal for Mariners' Cano, Diaz
The New York Mets and Seattle Mariners are building "significant momentum" toward a trade that would send second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz to Flushing, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that there is no agreement on financials or personnel between the two clubs. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says the Mets' offer includes some, but not all, of Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Jeff McNeil, Jarred Kelenic, and Justin Dunn.
Cano has not been approached regarding his no-trade clause. According to Passan, however, the eight-time All-Star is expected to waive it.
The 36-year-old Cano was held to 80 games last year after being suspended for as many contests for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The two-time Silver Slugger posted a .303/.374/.471 slash line with 10 home runs over 348 plate appearances. Cano has five years remaining on his current contract and is still owed $120 million.
Diaz is coming off of a remarkable 2018 season that ended with a Mariano Rivera Reliever of the Year honor for the American League. The 24-year-old flamethrower authored a 1.96 ERA and 1.61 FIP over 73 1/3 innings, notching 57 saves. He's under team control through the 2022 season.
Earlier this week, Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said he would have to be "blown away" in order to move Diaz. However, Seattle may be inclined to deal Diaz with Cano as a way to rid themselves of the second baseman's hefty contract.
