Goodell: NFL will not interfere with Tyreek Hill investigation

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that the league will remain patient when it comes to the ongoing legal matter involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

"As you know, there's a court proceeding still going on involving CPS - Child Protection Service - and we will not interfere with that," Goodell told reporters during Wednesday's Spring League Meeting, according to NFL.com's Herbie Teope. "The priority is this young child, and so we will obviously be cooperative with whatever the court wants there."

The investigation, which is being conducted by the Overland Park district attorney's office and involves the Kansas Department for Children and Families and local law enforcement, was reopened in April after television station KCTV5 released audio in which Hill's fiancee, Crystal Espinal, said he injured their three-year-old son.

Hill was subsequently told not to participate in Kansas City's team activities. The player's lawyer wrote a four-page letter to the NFL on May 2 to formally deny that his client abused the couple's son.

Goodell reinforced the Chiefs' decision to not act until more information is gathered and said he'd like to speak to Hill before any league-mandated ruling is made regarding the receiver's 2019 playing status.

"We are prepared to go ahead and have an interview whenever we have the permission to do so, and then we'll make a determination based on what information we have at that point in time," he said. "And so, again, I won't speculate on where we'll go, but we'll certainly get all the information we possibly can as soon as possible."
