Rockies select UCLA star Mike Toglia No. 23 overall
With the 23rd pick in the 2019 MLB amateur draft, the Colorado Rockies selected Mike Toglia, a junior first baseman from UCLA.
The Rockies originally selected Toglia in the 35th round of the 2016 draft (1,040th overall). At that time, he opted not to sign and instead went to UCLA. The decision proved wise, as three years later the Rockies circled back to Toglia in the first round.
Toglia emerged as a major power threat over his three years at UCLA. He led the Bruins in homers and slugging this year, and his power received a 60 grade from MLB Pipeline. He was also named to the 2019 Pac-12 All-Conference team.

MLB.com money quote: "Toglia is a solid athlete, especially given his 6-foot-5 frame that he's still growing into. And as a kid from the Northwest, he's still growing into the game. He's shown huge raw power from both sides of the plate, with some scouts putting a 70 on his raw power, but there are some questions about his ability to make enough contact to tap into it consistently."
