Report: Shumpert turns down Rockets' contract offer, won't attend camp
Free-agent guard Iman Shumpert reportedly declined a contract offer from the Houston Rockets and will not attend the team's training camp in Las Vegas this week, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
It's unclear what the Rockets offered Shumpert. The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after his four-year, $40-million contract - originally signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015 - expired this summer. He earned just over $11 million last season, according to Spotrac.
The timing of Houston's offer is also unknown, though Charania notes the two parties had been engaged in discussions for months.
Houston's summer roster moves may have cast doubt on Shumpert's playing time. Since being eliminated in the postseason by the Golden State Warriors, the Rockets re-signed Austin Rivers and Gerald Green, added Ben McLemore on a two-year deal, and traded Chris Paul for Russell Westbrook. Most recently, they penned Eric Gordon to a four-year, $76-million extension.
While Shumpert won't be in attendance, a number of other free agents will reportedly be at the Las Vegas camp, including Terrence Jones, Nick Young, Luc Mbah a Moute, Corey Brewer, Raymond Felton, and Thabo Sefolosha, according to Alykhan Bijani and Kelly Iko of The Athletic.
Shumpert landed with the Rockets in a three-team trade in February after beginning his 2018-19 season with the Sacramento Kings.
He averaged 4.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.6 steals in 19.1 minutes across 20 games (one start) with the club.
