Tony Romo cards impressive 2-under 70 in 1st round of Safeway Open
Tony Romo carded a stunning 2-under 70 in Round 1 of of the Safeway Open on Thursday, putting himself in position to make the cut in Napa, California.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is competing on the PGA Tour this week as an amateur after accepting a sponsor's invite to the event. His first-round performance, however, resembled that of a professional.
He birdied his first hole of the day and made the turn at 1-under. After back-to-back bogeys on his back nine, Romo birdied three of his final five holes to get to 2-under and finish the day in a tie for 20th.
The CBS broadcaster was the best player in his group by four shots. He beat dozens of the field's established Tour pros, including Hideki Matsuyama, edging the former world No. 2 by two.
This is the fourth time Romo has competed as an amateur on the PGA Tour, though he failed to make the cut all three times prior. His previous low round was 74.
Romo said he would skip his NFL broadcast duties Sunday if he were to make the cut in Napa - a daunting goal that seems within reach after Thursday's round.
