The Washington Redskins could fire head coach Jay Gruden if the team loses to the New York Giants on Sunday, two people with knowledge of the situation told Les Carpenter of The Washington Post.

Speculation regarding Gruden's job security became a hot topic in Week 3 after Chicago Bears pounded the Redskins to hand Washington its third straight loss to begin the campaign.

Though outside observers may view Washington as a rebuilding team, those around the club are said to be stunned by the slow start.

The Redskins have shown signs of life offensively through the season's first three weeks, but the defense has been woeful, surrendering 31.1 points per game.

Gruden, who's in his sixth year as Washington's head coach, owns a 35-47-1 record with the Redskins.
