Report: Panthers' result vs. Bucs could decide if Newton returns after bye
The Carolina Panthers' London matchup Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could have a significant impact on the team's quarterback situation moving forward.
If Kyle Allen continues to win, he's likely to keep the starting job while Carolina brings Cam Newton back slowly, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. If the Panthers lose, they could turn to Newton following their Week 7 bye.
There is a possibility, however, that the former MVP won't be cleared in two weeks as he makes his way back from a foot injury. While Newton was targeting a return after the bye, the team isn't sure he'll be healthy enough to play, Rapoport adds.
The former No. 1 pick may not even start practicing next week. Carolina doesn't plan to finalize a decision until Newton returns to full health.
Allen has yet to lose since taking over for Newton, and his coaching staff has expressed confidence in the young quarterback's ability to lead the team.
