Patriots acquire Sanu from Falcons for 2nd-round pick
The New England Patriots have boosted their receiving corps by acquiring wideout Mohamed Sanu from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a second-round draft pick, Atlanta announced Tuesday.
New England had been trying to trade for Sanu since before the 2019 draft, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. With the Falcons dropping to 1-6 on the season and both Julio Jones and promising sophomore Calvin Ridley locked up for the foreseeable future, Sanu was deemed expendable.
Sanu seemed to confirm he's on the move, taking to Twitter to thank the Falcons for the four years he spent in Atlanta.
At 7-0 following a dismantling of the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, the Patriots are apparently not resting on their laurels.
The 30-year-old Sanu will provide the Patriots with a reliable and experienced receiving option to reinforce a position group hindered by injuries to Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, and rookie N'Keal Harry, in addition to the failed one-week Antonio Brown experiment.
Sanu has 33 catches for 313 yards and a touchdown through seven games this season. His yards-per-reception average has dipped to 9.5 after approaching 13 yards in 2018, but some of that is likely owing to Atlanta's struggles on the offensive line forcing Matt Ryan into quicker throws.
