Report: Colts vetting Rivers ahead of free agency

The Indianapolis Colts are vetting quarterback Philip Rivers before free agency begins, a league source told Stephen Holder of The Athletic.

Rivers has already been linked to the Colts this offseason. A report on Wednesday pegged the team as his most likely landing spot based on conversations with rival franchises at the scouting combine. The Los Angeles Chargers have already announced they won't re-sign Rivers, who spent his first 16 seasons with the team.

Rivers, 38, is coming off an uneven campaign in which he committed 20 interceptions and posted an 88.5 passer rating, his lowest since 2007. He was an MVP candidate in 2018, however, after tossing 32 touchdowns and registering a passer rating of 105.5, tied for the highest mark he's posted in a full season.

The Colts have kept their options open at quarterback this offseason, with owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard each acknowledging that Jacoby Brissett isn't guaranteed to return as the starter.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis has not engaged in any discussions with Tom Brady's camp in advance of free agency, according to Holder.
