The PGA Tour, in conjunction with Golf Canada, canceled the 2020 RBC Canadian Open on Thursday to become the circuit's latest tournament impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The cancellation comes during the announcement of the Tour's plan to restart the 2019-20 season on June 11. The Canadian Open was left off the schedule, and the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, will take its place on the calendar once play resumes.
The Tour's third-oldest event - behind the Open Championship and U.S. Open - was set to take place at St. George's Golf and Country Club in Toronto. The Canadian Open won't be played for the first time since 1944 and canceled for the seventh time since it's inaugural edition in 1904. The first six cancellations were due to both World Wars.
At the end of March, the city of Toronto canceled all city-led major events and all city permits for major events through June 30. While sports weren't directly impacted by this announcement, the Canadian Open required a city permit to shut down a portion of an arterial road adjacent to St. George's in order to host the event.
