Major League Baseball continues to inch toward a plan to schedule the 2020 season.
The campaign could open in 10-12 states - and up to 20 home ballparks - when it officially gets underway, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, as people at the highest levels of the game are growing more confident that baseball will be played in 2020.
Alternately, games could reportedly start in Arizona, Texas, and Florida for a period of time before the league reassesses the situation.
The tri-state plan is one of several ideas that has been floated as an alternative to the standard MLB season. Another scenario involves playing the season in Arizona with players under strict quarantine.
On Monday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the league was looking to have a concrete plan in place by the end of May. Most officials estimate mid-June to July 4 is the most reasonable date range for Opening Day, Rosenthal reports, and that would allow for a regular season that lasts 80-100 games and runs through October.
The league is still gathering information before presenting a proposal to the MLBPA, according to Rosenthal.
