Phil vows rematch will be more entertaining: 'We needed a partner'
Phil Mickelson promises his rematch against Tiger Woods, which will raise $10 million for COVID-19 relief, will be a far more entertaining product than the first duel between the two longtime rivals.
Mickelson admitted on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Monday that there were flaws in the 2018 head-to-head match that should be fixed by adding Peyton Manning and Tom Brady into the mix.
"The interaction between two other players as a partner is going to be an important part of improving our match," Mickelson said. "When Tiger and I came down the stretch in Vegas, we clammed up. We didn't talk, we didn't communicate, we tightened up. We needed a partner there to get something out of us."
Mickelson, who will be partnered with Brady for the event, applauded Manning's ability to take jabs at fellow competitors, saying the former quarterback is "a good smack-talker" who will loosen up the group.
"(Manning) will get the best out of Tiger. He'll be the one to deliver the smack talk and Tiger will be the one to deliver the great shots. And that's fine." Mickelson said. "Tom and I usually have some pretty good responses too, so I think it will be a much more entertaining match than the first one because there will be a lot better interaction."
The interactions won't be limited to lighthearted banter. Since caddies won't be used, Mickelson imagines plenty of discussions about strategy, which are some of the more entertaining portions of a regular PGA Tour broadcast.
"Brady and I will be talking about each shot, club selection, wind, break, and so forth. It's almost like I'll be his caddie, he'll be mine, and we'll be feeding off of each other," Lefty said.
The charity event will take place May 24 at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. It will be broadcast live on TNT at 2 p.m. ET.
