White 'saddened' Khabib's father is reportedly in coma
UFC president Dana White released a statement Wednesday evening following a report that lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's father and trainer, Abdulmanap, is in a coma.
"Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is a true martial artist who lives a life of pride, honor, and respect," White said. "He instilled those same values in his son, world champion Khabib, at an early age and was always in his corner throughout his career. I know how close Khabib is with his father and I’m saddened to hear about his current state. My thoughts are with Abdulmanap and the Nurmagomedov family as he continues to fight."
Abdulmanap was initially hospitalized in late April in Dagestan due to suspected pneumonia. The 57-year-old was flown to a hospital in Moscow, Russia last week and is now in critical condition, according to Russian media outlet RT.
Khabib has not commented publicly on his father's condition.
Conor McGregor also issued a statement Wednesday. The Irishman, who lost to the undefeated titleholder at UFC 229 in October 2018 after months of bad blood between the two fighters, wrote that he's "praying for the Nurmagomedov family."
Khabib is expected to fight Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification bout later this year. The No. 3 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC is coming off of a submission win over Dustin Poirier last September.
