Realmuto doesn't want to discuss extension talks: Let's 'focus on the team'
Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto knows his contract situation will draw attention. However, since not much has changed, the All-Star is asking reporters not to bring it up.
"If you guys don't mind, I’d appreciate if we can keep the questions away from the contract situation, just because we were in the really preliminary stages early on in spring training before the pandemic and we haven’t really gone anywhere since then. So if we could focus on the team here and speak a little bit less about myself that would be greatly appreciated," Realmuto said Thursday, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
The 29-year-old is slated to hit free agency after the 2020 season. While his agent and the Phillies have talked recently, an extension isn't close, according to Zolecki.
Fans aren't the only ones hoping Realmuto stays in Philadelphia long term. Teammate Bryce Harper yelled "sign him" when the backstop blasted a two-run homer during an intrasquad game earlier this week.
"I hope he owns a team one day, honestly," Realmuto said. "I might be able to catch until I'm 60 if he owns a team. I know it's all in good fun. Obviously I appreciate the support from him, and the respect is mutual there. Yeah, he has a little fun with it, so I don't mind it too much."
The Phillies are scheduled to open the season at home on July 24 versus the Miami Marlins, kicking off a three-game series against Realmuto's former team.
