Liverpool's Thiago tests positive for COVID-19
Liverpool newcomer Thiago Alcantara has COVID-19 and is self-isolating, the club announced Tuesday.
The Reds said the 29-year-old is showing "minor symptoms but is in good health and is getting better."
The announcement comes a day after the Premier League reported 10 new cases of the coronavirus. More than 1,500 players and staff had been tested from Sept. 21-27.
Though the Premier League usually protects the identity of each player who tests positive, Thiago decided to come forward to remove the stigma around the disease, according to The Times' Paul Joyce.
Thiago trained with his teammates on Friday but was absent for Liverpool's 3-1 win over Arsenal on Monday.
Manager Jurgen Klopp said the Spanish international was unfit to play and that he would miss the club's last two games before the international break.
Thiago is still expected to return in time for the Merseyside derby against Everton on Oct. 17.
The midfielder arrived from Bayern Munich earlier in September for a reported £20 million and made his debut as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Chelsea.
