Report: Yankees, LeMahieu more than $25M apart in negotiations
The New York Yankees and free-agent infielder DJ LeMahieu have a mutual interest in striking a deal, but the two sides remain apart on financials.
There is more than a $25-million gap between the Yankees' offer and what the 2020 batting champion is looking for, a source told NJ.com's Brendan Kuty.
The 32-year-old's agent is reportedly seeking a five-year, $100-million deal for his client.
LeMahieu may not budge on the dollar figure. The Major League Baseball Players Association is reportedly strongly suggesting to free agents not to accept deals unless teams meet their asking price. The recommendation is due to the uncertainty surrounding the 2021 season's start because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Get your price or wait it out," a source told Kuty.
LeMahieu has been one of the Yankees' best players over the past two seasons, hitting .336/.386/.536 with 36 home runs, 43 doubles, and 129 RBIs.
The California native finished third in American League MVP voting in 2020.
