Chargers part with Lynn after 2 straight losing seasons
The Los Angeles Chargers fired head coach Anthony Lynn on Monday after four seasons with the club.
Lynn ends his tenure with a 33-31 record. He finished 12-4 in 2018, but his time in Los Angeles was otherwise marred by inconsistency, special-teams blunders, and late-game collapses.
"I'm not sure there is another person in this league more respected as a human being than Anthony, and I want to sincerely express my deepest gratitude for his leadership during a time of great change for our organization," Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. "As we all know, this is a result-driven business and, simply put, the results of the past two years have fallen short of expectations."
Lynn was a surprising hire in 2017 after he was running backs coach and interim head coach for the Buffalo Bills the year prior. The 52-year-old was regarded as an excellent leader and was well-liked by his players.
The Chargers' head coaching job instantly becomes one of the league's most attractive vacancies. Defensive stars Joey Bosa and Derwin James feature on the roster, while the team appears set at quarterback with likely Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert.
With Lynn's exit, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley isn't expected to return in 2021 either.
