John Madden: I'd hire Madden players onto my NFL staff
John Madden believes the video game bearing his name could be used as a coaching tool in today's NFL.
The Hall of Famer, who won Super Bowl XI as the Oakland Raiders' head coach, told ESPN's Michael Rothstein that he would've added gamers onto his staff had Madden been around when he was working in the NFL.
"I would have a couple of young guys that are good, good Madden players, and hire them and put them on my staff," Madden said. "And each week I would have them play our opponent. If the Raiders are playing Kansas City, I'd have one of them be the Raiders and one of them be Kansas City. And then I would run our players against their defenses and their defenses against our players. And I'd have them just check that out and then write up - this was good, this was bad, had trouble here and trouble there. I don't know how much I would use it, but that's what I would do."
Madden also touched on how proud he is to have been involved with the game since 1988.
"This has been part of what I've done since I got out of coaching. And it's one of the things that I'm known for and one of the things I'm very proud of," he said.
The NFL has partnered with Madden maker EA Sports to hold this year's Pro Bowl virtually, with current players, NFL legends, celebrities, and streamers competing in a weeklong series of matchups in the game.
