Darko Milicic: Jokic should sign for $500M after Gobert's extension
Darko Milicic is the latest former NBA player to question the Utah Jazz's decision to sign Rudy Gobert to a five-year, $205-million extension.
Milicic, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2003 NBA Draft, suggested in an interview that Denver Nuggets center and fellow Serbian Nikola Jokic deserves a deal worth more than double that of Gobert's.
"We must be aware that money is the basis of NBA's existence," Milicic told 24 Sedam, as translated by EuroHoops. "If Gobert is worth that much money, then our Jokic should sign a contract for $500,000,000. That’s how much better he is than Rudy.
"For them (the NBA), marketing has always been in the first place and for the league to make it a show business as much as possible. Those numbers that are turning around today are simply unreal. Yes a lot is spent and has to come back but to give so much money to someone is totally insane."
Gobert's extension has also drawn criticism from Shaquille O'Neal, who told the "All Things Covered" podcast, "You average 11 points in the NBA, you can get 200 million." The Jazz center brushed off O'Neal's remarks, saying if people want to discredit him, "it's on them."
