Ex-NFLer Oher launches new venture to help people in need
Michael Oher is focusing on giving back in retirement.
The former NFL offensive tackle and subject of the Academy Award-winning film, "The Blind Side," recently launched an app called Good Deeds that allows people to give material items such as clothing and shoes to others in need in their community. Users post items they need or can give, and are then connected through the app.
"I thought back to when I was coming up, how I was going to Goodwill and I didn't have $2 or $3 to buy a pair of socks, some shorts, T-shirts - I just didn't have 50 cents to my name," Oher said in an interview with People's Alyssa Johnson. "I thought, I've got to come up with something that can bridge the gap between the people that are in need, and people who are really wanting to give."
Oher said he was further pushed to launch Good Deeds after the tornado that hit Nashville last year.
"I was watching the news and so many bottles of water got left in a warehouse. Supplies never got to the people," Oher added. "I would donate stuff all the time to the shelters, the thrift store, things like that and it just got me thinking. I'm donating all this money and I don't know if it's going to the people that are in need."
A first-round pick of the 2009 draft, Oher played eight seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers.
