With the 20th pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected Trey Sweeney, a shortstop from Eastern Illinois University.
Sweeney, 21, is a 6-foot-4, 200-pounder who hits from the left side. He just finished a stellar junior season for the Panthers and was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year. Baseball America, Perfect Game, and the ABCA also named him a first-team All-American.
Sweeney's hitting is his biggest tool, but he may need to shift positions due to a lack of speed.
The Louisville, Kentucky native is just the third first-round selection to come out of Eastern Illinois, and the first since Stan Rover went 16th overall to the Oakland Athletics in 1988.
