O'Neal: Malice at the Palace doc offers 'actual facts,' bigger story
Jermaine O'Neal wants to set the record straight on Malice at the Palace.
The infamous 2004 brawl between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons was examined on the new Netflix documentary series "Untold," which features interviews with O'Neal and other players involved in the incident. Ahead of Tuesday's premiere, O'Neal joined the "All the Smoke" podcast with Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes to discuss what viewers can expect from the documentary.
"I felt like this doc was able to give us our platform and now have people be able to make a conclusion on actual facts now, not somebody else sitting on the couch somewhere, writing up some articles that they don't even know about," O'Neal said.
O'Neal, one of several players charged for their role in the incident, explained how most fans focus on the fight without realizing there was more to the story.
"When people think about the brawl, I don't care where I'm at, 'Hey man, I remember the scrap.' It's all people talk about. They don't know everything else," O'Neal said. "This went on for like 10 years, like I had a felony - the same charge you'll get for shooting and stabbing somebody. You see what I'm saying? And it was like a situation where to me, beyond even those things, it allowed people to take shots at our culture, take shots at our league, and still not be able to have a conversation - a real educated conversation - about what actually really happened. ... This doc really gives people the opportunity to kind of relate to and say, 'OK, damn, it was much bigger than them throwing hands.'"
The "Untold" series will continue with four more episodes focusing on other pivotal moments in sports.
