Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz and guard Quenton Nelson are trending toward being ready for the Sept. 12 season opener, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The two underwent identical foot surgeries in early August and were expected to miss 5-to-12 weeks.

Wentz appeared at practice Tuesday without a walking boot and is set to begin rehab next week. The Colts acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles in an offseason trade after his relationship with his former club disintegrated.

Nelson is looking to keep his iron man reputation intact, as the 25-year-old has never missed a game in his NFL career. The three-time All-Pro quickly established himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the league after the Colts drafted him sixth overall in 2018.

Jacob Eason is the favorite to start at quarterback Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks if Wentz is unavailable, though Sam Ehlinger has also taken some first-team reps at training camp.

Indianapolis will open its preseason schedule Sunday versus the Carolina Panthers.
