Texas youth football team kicked from playoffs for being 'too good'
A Texas youth football team with a perfect record was deemed "too good" to compete in the playoffs.
The Flower Mound Rebels, a squad made up of 7- and 8-year-olds, are the top team in their league this season and have outscored opponents 199-6 through their first seven games, according to Scott Gordon of NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. Despite this, the Rebels have been barred from the playoffs.
Keller Youth Association vice president and coach Rhett Taylor, whose team lost 33-0 to the Rebels this season, said their dominance led to the board's decision to kick them out of the playoffs.
"They are too good. I fully admit it," Taylor said. "They are a select-level team. They are too good for a rec-level team."
Rebels coach Ragan Montero called Taylor a "sore loser" and accused him of "changing the rules so it benefits him." She also said that only seven of her 17 players had played football before joining her team.
"I was just very sad," 8-year-old center Greyson Tanner said. "I feel like we deserve to play in the playoffs."
