Hal Steinbrenner: 'I'm all for' having 2 great New York teams
After both New York clubs went on hefty offseason spending sprees, Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said he's happy there are now two great baseball teams in the Big Apple.
"I think having two great New York sports teams is ... phenomenal for the city, it's phenomenal for the rivalry, and I'm all for it," Steinbrenner said, according to the Bergen Record's Pete Caldera.
"I was hoping we'd both be the last two standing (in 2022). Hopefully, it (happens) this year.''
The cross-town rivals, who own two of MLB's largest payrolls, have combined to commit nearly $1.4 billion on players this offseason. Steve Cohen's New York Mets have been responsible for over $800 million.
That cash went toward contracts for some of baseball's biggest stars, such as AL MVP Aaron Judge, three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, and superstar infielder Carlos Correa.
The two New York teams haven't met in the World Series since 2000 when the Yankees defeated the Mets 4-1.
