Report: Celtics closing in on Wizards' Porzingis, Clippers get Brogdon in 3-team deal
The Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Clippers are closing in on a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Morris and the 30th pick in Thursday's NBA draft to Washington, and Malcolm Brogdon to Los Angeles, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Porzingis has a $36-million player option for the 2023-24 season that needs to be exercised ahead of June's free-agency period. The 27-year-old can sign a two-year, $77-million extension on July 6 if he opts into his deal, ESPN's Bobby Marks reports.
The Clippers would send wing Amir Coffey to the Wizards in the deal, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Wizards would also receive Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari to match salary in the trade, Wojnarowski adds.
Porzingis averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 blocks in 65 contests last season. The Latvian big man also made 38.5% of his 3-pointers, knocking down 2.1 per game.
The Celtics were one win away from becoming the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-0 deficit but lost in Game 7 to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.
Boston acquired Brogdon last offseason in a deal with the Indiana Pacers. The 30-year-old averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 67 games in 2022-23 to win Sixth Man of the Year.
Due to the trade, the Celtics are unlikely to re-sign forward Grant Williams, sources told The Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach.
Morris has spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Clippers. The 33-year-old averaged 11.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 65 contests last campaign.
The Wizards traded franchise stalwart Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday for a package including Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, second-round picks, and pick swaps.
Washington could also lose Kyle Kuzma as the 27-year-old reportedly declined his $13-million player option.
The Wizards hired Clippers executive Michael Winger as president of the organization earlier in June after the franchise missed the playoffs for the second season in a row. Washington holds the No. 8 pick in Thursday's NBA draft.
