Report: Pelicans' Murphy to undergo testing after suffering knee injury
New Orleans Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III suffered a meniscus injury during a workout Tuesday, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Murphy will reportedly undergo further testing. It's not currently clear whether he'll need surgery, Wojnarowski adds.
Murphy is coming off a breakout sophomore season. The 23-year-old averaged 14.5 points per game, nearly a 10-point increase from his rookie campaign. Murphy also added 3.6 rebounds per contest and shot a scorching 40.6% from beyond the arc.
The 6-foot-9 forward ranked in the top 20 league-wide last season in threes made, 2-point field-goal percentage, effective field-goal percentage, true shooting, offensive rating, and turnover percentage. He also competed in the Slam Dunk contest.
Murphy played an increased role as one of the NBA's better 3-and-D players with Pelicans superstar Zion Williamson missing a majority of last season. The Virginia product played 31 minutes per contest while starting in 65 of his 79 appearances after averaging just 13.9 minutes in his first campaign.
The Pelicans were gearing up for a fully healthy roster built around Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and CJ McCollum, with Murphy as a key complementary piece.
