Report: Lillard will only report to training camp with Blazers, Heat
Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard would only report to training camp if he remains with his current franchise or gets dealt to the Miami Heat, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania on Monday.
Miami has long been the reported favorite to acquire the seven-time All-Star, who requested a trade out of Portland earlier in the offseason. The two teams are reportedly expected to re-engage in trade negotiations ahead of the start of the new campaign.
Charania says the point guard wouldn't report for an organization like the Toronto Raptors, a team that made a similar move for a disgruntled star in Kawhi Leonard back in 2018 and has the requisite assets to make a deal.
In late July, the NBA released a memo warning Lillard and his agent that any public comments made about his desire to join the Heat, and not any other team, could subject him to discipline.
Meanwhile, Blazers general manager Joe Cronin has said he will be patient with a Lillard trade, with a focus on bringing back a solid return. The Eastern Conference-winning Heat lack significant trade assets for the rebuilding Blazers, as they have a veteran, win-now roster.
Training camps across the NBA are set to get underway on Sept. 27.
