J.J. Watt: 'It hurts' to see Titans wearing Oilers throwback uniforms
The Tennessee Titans will be sporting Houston Oilers throwback uniforms for their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and one former Texans player isn't too happy about it.
J.J. Watt, who spent the majority of his 12-year NFL career in Houston, admitted on Wednesday's episode of "The Pat McAfee Show" that it's upsetting to see the Oilers threads being worn by a team outside of Houston.
"Having lived in Houston for 10 years and the people there and the connection that they have to Earl Campbell, to Warren Moon, to these guys that wore those, to Billy White Shoes," Watt said. "These guys that wore those uniforms and what that meant when they play at the Astrodome. It hurts to not have been able to wear those in Houston, and it hurts to see them being worn somewhere else."
The Oilers called Houston home from 1960-1996 before relocating to Tennessee and eventually changing their name to the Titans. The Texans, meanwhile, began play as an expansion team in 2002.
While Watt disapproves of the Titans wearing the uniforms, several former Oilers players are thrilled about it.
"I am going to make this as plain and simple as I can for anyone who has any doubts about this: The Oilers are Titans history, not Texans history," Hall of Fame linebacker Robert Brazile told Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com. "Look at the Titans Ring of Honor, and how many Oilers are in there? It's a good number (10). How many Oilers are in the Texans Ring of Honor? The answer is zero.
"I was born an Oiler and I'm going to die a Titan."
The Titans will also wear the Oilers uniforms against the Texans on Dec. 17.
