Wembanyama's debut jersey fetches record $762K at auction
A jersey worn by San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama during his NBA regular-season debut set a new auction record this week.
The jersey sold for $762,000 at a Sotheby's auction Tuesday, the highest price ever paid for an NBA debut rookie jersey, according to ESPN's Dan Hajducky. It was expected to fetch between $80,000 to $120,000.
Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, wore the jersey during the second half of the Spurs' 126-119 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 25. The French phenom finished the game with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one block.
Wembanyama's jersey was one of more than 60 game-worn NBA jerseys auctioned off by Sotheby's on Tuesday. The lot also included the rookie debut jerseys of No. 2 pick Scoot Henderson and No. 3 pick Brandon Miller, which sold for $19,050 and $27,940, respectively.
The all-time record for an NBA rookie jersey is $3.69 million, which someone paid for a Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers jersey in May 2021.
