Report: Maryland's Tagovailoa enters transfer portal
Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, according to 247 Sports' Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer.
Tagovailoa would need to be cleared by the NCAA to qualify for a sixth season, according to The Athletic's Max Olson. A petition for an added year would center on his 2019 freshman season at Alabama, where he played in only five games. The NCAA allows players to participate in four or fewer games to keep their redshirt. However, Tagovailoa played just two snaps in two separate games during his freshman year, per Hummer.
Tagovailoa already used his extra year of eligibility granted to student-athletes after the COVID-19 pandemic for the 2023 season.
The 23-year-old set the Big Ten career record with 11,256 passing yards during his four seasons with the Terrapins. He's the younger brother of Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa.
The Hawaiian opted out of the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30. Billy Edwards Jr. led Maryland to a 31-13 win over Auburn in Tagovailoa's place.
Tagovailoa will search for his third school after beginning his collegiate career at Alabama. He went on to transfer to Maryland following his freshman campaign. The 5-foot-11, 208-pound passer holds most of the Terrapins' career passing records, including touchdowns (77), completion rate (67.1%), and 300-yard passing games (15).
