John Tesh: NBC plans to revive 'Roundball Rock' if it wins NBA rights

NBC may bring back an iconic theme song if it locks up NBA broadcasting rights.

While appearing on the "Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz" on Tuesday, composer John Tesh revealed that the network has reached out to him about potentially reviving the NBA on NBC theme "Roundball Rock."

"They have (reached out), actually," Tesh said. "It's nothing firm, but they said, 'Hey, can you stay frosty on this?'"

He later added: "At the end of June, we're heading to Nashville, and we've got a full orchestra on hold, we're going to re-record it. Because the recording, I think it still sounds great, but I wanted to make a few changes. Maybe open up the middle."

"Roundball Rock," which was written and produced by Tesh, was used on NBA on NBC from 1990-2002. Tesh said he came up with the theme while staying in a hotel in Europe and called his answering machine at home so he wouldn't forget it.

NBCUniversal has offered $2.5 billion per year to air a package of NBA games, Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal reports. If NBC wins the rights, it could mark the end of TNT's long-running popular studio show "Inside the NBA."
