Cousy hopes Celtics win 18th title before he dies: 'I'm in overtime'
As he approaches his 96th birthday, Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy would like nothing more than to see the franchise capture its 18th championship this season.
"I'm 95 (expletive) years old with one foot in the grave and I can barely move," Cousy told Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe. "I know I'm in overtime. So everything in your life becomes more meaningful. And one of the last things I want to be able to see is for the Celtics to hang up banner No. 18."
Cousy, who turns 96 on Aug. 9, played 13 seasons for the Celtics from 1950-63, winning six NBA titles during that span.
The Celtics currently hold a 2-0 lead over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, with Game 3 set for Wednesday night. Cousy is confident Boston will win the series, which would break a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in NBA history.
"I will take great pride in seeing this," Cousy said. "This puts us back ahead of the Lakers. To have been a part of that is as good a legacy as I could hope for."
